What does it mean to dream about a lion?
The lion is called the queen of the animal kingdom — and in dream symbolism, that’s exactly what it is: a symbol of royal power, courage, and natural authority. Dreaming of a lion is one of the more intense animal dreams, and it tends to stay with you long after you wake.
Whether the lion in the dream was friendly or hostile, calm or enraged, changes the interpretation considerably.
Between courage, power and what burns
Inner strength and leadership
The most common reading of the lion has to do with a power that already lives inside you. The dream can appear during periods when you’re about to take an important step — taking on more responsibility, leading others, or standing up for yourself in a way you haven’t before.
The lion asks: are you ready to step forward?
Authority and power dynamics
The lion can also represent a person in your life who holds significant authority — a boss, a parent, a partner. The tone of the dream reveals a lot: do you respect this authority, are you afraid of it, or do you want to challenge it?
Suppressed anger or passion
An enraged lion is often read — much like the tiger — as an image of anger or strong feeling that hasn’t found an outlet. Something is burning inside you, and the dream is asking you to notice it.
The lion in its different guises
If the lion was calm and majestic: You’re in touch with your own authority and inner steadiness. A strong, positive dream.
If the lion attacked you: Something powerful and uncontrollable is threatening you — either from without or from within. See also bear for a similar symbol of power.
If you tamed the lion: You’re in the process of mastering something significant within yourself. An impressive image of self-control.
If the lion was injured: Your own power or confidence has been weakened by something. Something, or someone, has worn you down.
Courage, pride and leadership
In many cultures the lion is a symbol of kingship — in Egypt, Rome, and medieval Europe. It represents the best of human leadership: courage paired with dignity. Jung saw the lion as a symbol of the Ego in its strongest form — but warned against letting the inner lion turn tyrannical.
In Christian symbolism, the lion is both Christ (the Lion of Judah) and the devil (the lion that prowls, seeking someone to devour). This duality — a power that can be either good or destructive — sits at the heart of what the lion dream is telling you.
