In Judeo-Christian tradition, stone anchors some of the oldest stories: Jacob’s ladder rose from a stone he’d used as a pillow, the commandments were carved into stone tablets, and Jesus is described in the early church as its “cornerstone”. Megalithic cultures — from Stonehenge to the standing stones of Brittany and Ireland — raised enormous stones to mark time, ritual, and lineage, giving stone a kind of memory that predates writing itself.

In alchemy, and later in Jungian thought, the lapis philosophorum — the philosopher’s stone — stood as the goal of the whole transformative process: the lasting, integrated, authentic self, tempered by everything it had been through.
