Getting complete darkness during sleep takes real effort for a lot of people — streetlights, long summer daylight, screens left on standby all work against it.
It’s worth the effort. Light during sleep isn’t a trivial thing.
Why darkness matters biologically
Melatonin production is directly tied to darkness. The pineal gland produces melatonin when it’s dark and stops when there’s light — even faint light through closed eyelids. Blue light is the most powerful suppressor, but all light wavelengths can disrupt sleep to some degree.
Studies show that even moderate lighting during sleep — comparable to a dim table lamp — significantly reduces melatonin levels and shortens the proportion of deep sleep. The brain registers light even while you “sleep” and adjusts sleep depth accordingly.
Sleep masks — benefits and limitations
A good sleep mask blocks light effectively and costs very little. That makes it one of the cheapest and most accessible sleep improvements available.
What to look for:
A contoured design is clearly better than a flat mask. A flat mask presses against the eyelids, which can cause discomfort and interfere with eye movement during REM sleep. A contoured (“3D”) mask leaves room around the eyes and lets the eyelids move freely.
Material: satin and silk are gentle on skin and lighter than cotton. Cotton breathes better and absorbs more for people who sweat.
Adjustable straps matter — too loose and it slips off, too tight and it causes headaches.
Wash it regularly — a mask collects skin oils and sweat.
Limitations:
Some people find masks claustrophobic or uncomfortable. For people with sleep apnoea, a mask that presses against the nose could potentially worsen breathing issues.
Blackout curtains — the more effective fix
For anyone sleeping in a bright room — especially during long summer daylight hours — blackout curtains are one of the most effective investments for the sleep environment. They block light more thoroughly than a mask and require no adjustment period.
What to look for:
“Blackout” curtains vary enormously in how effective they actually are. Not everything labelled blackout blocks all light. Look for products that are tested and rated for light blocking, ideally with a stated percentage.
Fitting the curtain close to the wall matters a great deal — light leaking in along the edges can disrupt sleep almost as much as an uncovered window. A wrap-around or wall-hugging design gives the best result.
Pairing curtains with a light-blocking blind or roller shade behind them gives better isolation than curtains alone.
Special situations
Shift workers benefit particularly from blackout curtains — sleeping during the day without effective darkness is biologically demanding.
Children are especially sensitive to light during sleep. Blackout curtains in a child’s room support both better nighttime sleep and easier bedtimes during long summer evenings.
Travel is where a sleep mask shows its clearest advantage — it’s portable and provides darkness in hotel rooms, on planes and on trains, where you have no control over the lighting.
Light and your dreams
Whichever solution you choose, mask or curtains, the outcome is the same: a dark bedroom produces deeper, more coherent sleep, better REM periods, and more vivid, memorable dreams.
It’s simple, direct biology: darkness signals night to the brain, melatonin is produced as it should be, sleep architecture normalises, and dreams — which live in REM sleep — get better conditions to occur in.
