What is sleep? A guide to the science of sleep
Sleep isn't passive rest — it's one of the body's most active processes. Here's what research knows about what sleep is, and why we can't live without it.

We spend a third of our lives asleep. Yet most of us know surprisingly little about what actually happens during those hours — what the brain does, what the body repairs, and why some nights leave you fully energized while others leave you more exhausted than when you lay down.
Sleep isn’t a void. It’s one of the body’s most active and complex states.
What sleep actually is
Sleep is a periodic state of reduced consciousness and muscle activity that all mammals, birds, and many other animals need in order to survive. It isn’t simply the absence of wakefulness — it’s an active biological process with a series of well-defined stages and functions.
During sleep, a number of critical processes take place that can’t happen as effectively while awake:
The brain consolidates memories. It transfers information from short-term to long-term memory and decides what to keep and what to discard. Sleep poorly after learning something new, and you’ll remember it substantially worse.
The body repairs itself. Growth hormone is released primarily during deep sleep and drives cell renewal, muscle repair, and immune function. Wounds heal faster at night than during the day for exactly this reason.
The brain cleans itself. The glymphatic system — the brain’s waste-clearance system — is roughly ten times more active during sleep than while awake. It flushes out waste products, including the proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
Hormones are regulated. Leptin and ghrelin (the hunger hormones), cortisol, insulin, and a range of other hormones are balanced during sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation is a documented risk factor for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
What controls sleep?
Two biological systems work together to regulate your sleep.
The first is the circadian rhythm — your internal biological clock, governed by a brain region called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It runs on a roughly 24-hour cycle and syncs primarily with light. Light signals “day” to the brain and suppresses melatonin release; darkness signals “night” and triggers melatonin production.
The second system is sleep pressure — a gradual buildup of sleep-promoting substances, particularly adenosine, over the hours you’re awake. The longer you’re awake, the more adenosine accumulates, and the stronger the pressure to sleep becomes. Caffeine works by blocking adenosine receptors — it doesn’t reduce the actual sleep pressure, only your perception of it.
The two systems ideally work in harmony: sleep pressure peaks around bedtime, just as the circadian rhythm signals that it’s night. When they fall out of phase — as with shift work, jet lag, or highly irregular bedtimes — sleep problems follow.
The sleep stages — a night in the body
Sleep isn’t a uniform state. Through the night you cycle through four stages in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, repeated four to six times per night.
Stages 1 and 2 are light sleep, where you can easily be woken and the brain begins to slow down. Stage 3 is deep sleep — the most physically restorative stage, where growth hormone is released and the brain cleans itself. REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) is where dreams happen: the brain is nearly as active as when awake, while the body is paralyzed to prevent you from physically acting out your dreams.
Deep sleep dominates the first half of the night, REM sleep the second. A full night gives you both — which is why consistently cutting sleep short is so harmful: you always lose the part you need most.

Dreams — sleep’s deepest layer
Dreams are sleep’s most fascinating dimension. They occur primarily during REM sleep and aren’t random. Research shows that REM sleep plays an active role in emotional regulation: the brain processes emotionally charged material in a physiological environment where stress hormones are reduced — which helps dampen the emotional intensity of painful memories over time.
Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud both believed dreams communicate something essential from the unconscious. Modern sleep research doesn’t confirm all of that framework, but what it does confirm is that dreams serve a real function: without sufficient REM sleep, emotional processing is significantly reduced, and the risk of anxiety and depression rises.

The consequences of not sleeping enough
Research on sleep deprivation is among the most robust in medical science — and the findings are serious. After a single bad night, concentration and reaction time are noticeably reduced. After two or three nights of under six hours, performance is comparable to a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent — but unlike alcohol, you don’t notice it as clearly.
Chronic sleep deprivation raises the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, depression, and dementia. Sleep researcher Matthew Walker puts it bluntly: there’s no aspect of your health that isn’t made worse by insufficient sleep.
The clearest signs that you’re not getting enough sleep aren’t always obvious tiredness. Watch for: needing an alarm clock to wake up, an afternoon slump, dozing off in front of the TV, and relying on caffeine to function in the morning.
Your sleep need
Sleep need is individual, but the research consensus is clear:
Adults between 18 and 64 need 7–9 hours. Adults over 65 need 7–8 hours. Teenagers need 8–10 hours — and their biological clock is actually shifted later, which makes early school start times especially problematic. School-age children need 9–11 hours.
One important distinction: sleep duration isn’t the same as sleep quality. Eight hours of fragmented sleep is far worse than seven hours of continuous, deep sleep.
